Scarborough has expanded a lot in the last 20 years. A shopping centre (The Brunswick Pavilion) was built in 1991, and holds big name stores like Topman, Allsports, Debenhams and Andy's Records. The Stephen Joseph Theatre moved from Westwood to the old Odeon Cinema opposite the train station, after been given £1.5 million by the National Lottery at the beginning of 1996.
Scarborough also has it's claim to fame, in 1993 the Holbeck Hotel took three days to sink into the sea after sliding down the South Cliffs. The event attracted international media interest. During 1997, Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor came to Scarborough to film the Oscar nominated 'Little Voice' with Michael Caine, Jane Horrock, Brenda Blethyn and Jim Broadbent.
